A version of this conversation happens almost every week in coaching. A parent has read the books. They know the language. They can recite the calm, validating sentence they are supposed to use when their toddler comes apart at bedtime. And they tell me, with real frustration, that it doesn't work.
So we slow down and look at what actually happened. Usually it turns out the words were fine. What wasn't fine was everything underneath them: the clenched jaw, the rising voice, the body that had already braced for a fight three minutes earlier. The script was correct. The nervous system delivering it was not calm, and the child read the nervous system long before they processed the words.
This is the part of parenting that almost no one tells you about in advance. A great deal of what you transmit to a young child doesn't travel through the content of what you say. It travels through your state.
You are not just managing your child's behavior. You are, whether you mean to or not, lending them your nervous system. That is not a metaphor. It is most of what co-regulation actually is.
Children run on borrowed calm
A young child cannot yet regulate their own internal state on demand. The brain systems that will eventually let them pause, soothe themselves, and recover from a big feeling are years away from being reliable. The prefrontal cortex, which handles impulse control and the management of competing urges, is still very much under construction through the toddler and preschool years and won't be substantially mature until the mid-twenties.
So in the meantime, children do something elegant and slightly inconvenient for tired parents: they borrow regulation from us. They catch our steadiness, or our lack of it. A calm adult body, a lower voice, a slower pace, an unhurried presence: these aren't just nice touches. They are the actual mechanism by which a small child's overwhelmed system finds its way back down. The technical name is co-regulation, and it is the developmental precursor to the self-regulation we want children to have later.
The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard describes self-regulation as a capacity that gets built, not one children arrive with. It develops through thousands of ordinary repetitions of being regulated by someone steadier, the way a child learns balance by holding a hand before they let go. Every time a flooded toddler borrows calm from an adult and comes back down, the circuitry for doing it themselves gets a little more practice.
Which leads to an uncomfortable but clarifying conclusion: if a child regulates by borrowing from the adult, then the adult's state isn't a side issue. It is the main instrument.
The still face, and how early this starts
Edward Tronick's "still face" experiments, first run in the 1970s and replicated many times since, show how early and how acutely children track a caregiver's emotional availability. A parent plays warmly with their baby, then, on cue, goes blank: neutral expression, no response. Within seconds, most babies notice. They work to win the parent back, with smiles and gestures and noises. When that fails, many become distressed and disorganized. The face went still, and the baby's whole system registered it.
The experiment is usually cited as evidence of how relational babies are. It is also a quiet demonstration of something parents feel but rarely name: your face and your state are information your child is reading constantly, including in the moments you assume you're hiding it.
Stress is, to some degree, contagious
The borrowing goes both ways, which is the harder half of this story. Just as a child can catch our calm, they can catch our stress.
A study by Sara Waters, Tessa West, and Wendy Berry Mendes put numbers on this in a striking way. They stressed mothers (a public-speaking and evaluation task), then reunited them with their infants and measured the babies' heart rates. The infants' cardiovascular stress responses tracked their mothers' physiological state. The babies had not been in the room for the stressor. They picked it up on reunion, through contact and cues, not through anything anyone said. The researchers called it stress contagion.
I want to be careful here, because this is exactly the kind of finding that gets turned into something it isn't. It does not mean a stressed parent damages their child, or that you have to be serene to raise a regulated kid. It is a single mechanism, measured under specific conditions, and it points to one fact worth holding lightly: your state doesn't stay neatly inside you. Some of it transmits. A calmer parent is, on average, offering a calmer surface for a child to organize against.
The toddler usually just pulls the thread
If a parent's activation matters this much, it's worth being honest about where the activation actually comes from. Most of the time, it isn't the child.
The refused shoes at 7:45 in the morning are not, by themselves, enough to flood a calm, rested, unhurried adult. What floods us is the load that was already there: not enough sleep, the meeting we're now going to be late for, the noise, the second child who also needs something, the long private history each of us carries about being defied, disrespected, or ignored. The toddler at the door didn't build that load. They just pulled the thread that was already taut.
This is genuinely good news, even though it doesn't feel like it at first. If your two-year-old were the cause of your activation, you'd be stuck. They are going to keep being two. But your activation is mostly about your own state and history, and that is something you can actually get some leverage on.
What it feels like
"My kid knows exactly how to push my buttons." A sense that the child is doing something to you, on purpose, and that staying calm means white-knuckling your way through their behavior.
What is closer to true
The buttons are yours. The child is small and dysregulated and pressing on a load you were already carrying. Calm comes less from controlling them and more from tending to that load.
Working with your nervous system instead of against it
None of this is an argument for performing calm. Children read performed calm easily; a tight, white-knuckled "I am being very patient right now" voice is not regulating, and most toddlers can tell the difference. The goal isn't to suppress what you feel. It's to notice it earlier and have a few real options before it runs the moment.

The goal is not performed calm. It is noticing earlier, with real options.
Notice the body first
Activation almost always shows up in the body before it shows up in your behavior. The jaw tightens. The shoulders climb. There's heat in the chest, a quickening, the urge to win. Most parents only realize they've flipped their own lid after they've already raised their voice. The skill worth building is catching it a beat earlier, when it's still just a clenched jaw and not yet a yell. You can't manage a state you haven't noticed.
Buy a beat before you respond
You do not have to react at the speed your child is escalating. As long as the child is safe, a pause is allowed. A slow exhale, with the out-breath longer than the in-breath, genuinely nudges the body toward its calmer setting; this is one of the few "regulation tips" with a clear physiological basis. So does dropping your voice and slowing your movements on purpose, which has the useful side effect of giving your child a calmer surface to borrow from. Even a plain "I need a second" models something most of us were never taught: that you can feel a surge and not immediately act on it.
Lower your own intensity before you address theirs
A dysregulated adult trying to regulate a dysregulated child usually produces two dysregulated people and a louder room. The sequence that tends to work is the unglamorous one: get your own system down first, even partway, then offer the child your steadier state, then hold the limit or do the teaching. Not because the limit doesn't matter, but because a child in a stress response can't use it until there's a calmer adult to organize against.
Plan for repair, because you will lose it sometimes
You will not get this right reliably, and the research does not ask you to. Tronick's other major contribution, beyond the still face, is the finding that ordinary parent-child interaction is full of small ruptures and repairs. Connection breaks, then gets rebuilt, over and over. What protects a relationship over time is not the absence of rupture. It's that repair keeps happening.
So when you snap, and you will, the move is not a shame spiral. It's reconnection: a return, an acknowledgment, a re-establishing of warmth once your own system is back online. Children are not harmed by a parent who occasionally loses it and comes back. They are shaped, in a good way, by watching a person feel something big, recover, and repair. That is the exact skill you are hoping they'll learn.
Why tending to your own state isn't selfish
Parents, especially the conscientious ones who read articles like this, often treat their own depletion as the lowest priority on the list. The framing of this article should make the case against that. If your nervous system is one of your child's primary regulation tools, then your sleep, your support, and your baseline stress load are not indulgences. They set the floor you parent from.
Lowering the background stress in your own life, however imperfectly, isn't time taken away from your child. It's part of what you're offering them. A parent running on more reserve has more calm to lend, catches their own activation sooner, and recovers faster when a moment goes sideways. The work of regulating yourself is, in a real sense, work you are doing for your child.
The bottom line
The scripts aren't useless. They're scaffolding, and on a good day they help. But they were never the active ingredient. The active ingredient is the state of the person delivering them.
So the next time a calm, validating sentence doesn't land the way the book promised, the question to ask isn't "what should I have said?" It's "what state was I in when I said it?" That single shift, from managing the child's behavior to noticing your own nervous system, tends to change more than any new phrase ever does.
You don't have to be a calm person. You just have to become a person who can notice when you're not, a little earlier each time, and who knows how to come back. Your child is already watching you do exactly that. It's one of the most useful things they'll ever learn.
